The application updates your location even when in background. Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.
In iOS however, the CellSpotter app does go into Battery Conserve Mode once you stay in one location for a short period time, thus conserving battery consumption while still reporting your approximate location. Once you move from that location, you must touch the app icon and open up the app in order to wake up the application and allow it to begin reporting changes again. This Battery Conserve Mode feature can dramatically reduce battery consumption as compared to other GPS apps on the market today.
